Volunteers Needed for the FIRST Lego League (FLL) Robotics Competition
PTOS Education Committee Call for Volunteers:
FIRST Lego League (FLL) Robotics Competition on Jan 19, 2013 at UMBC
You will work 12 hours (well not quite), make no money, interact with 900 young engineers, get free food, have a blast, be totally exhausted, meet interesting people, and did we say you don't get paid? But you do get a free T-Shirt!
There are lots of ways to get involved. This call is for Judges, but we also need Judge's Assistants, Registration Staff, Runners, Time Keepers, Referees, Emcee, Pit Runners, Team Queuers, Practice Table Managers, Greeters, Setup Breakdown Crew, Floaters. Use the link above to volunteer for any of those positions.
Main judging categories and qualifications:
1. Technical Robot Design – This category judges the technical merits of the robot in terms of innovation, programming, and mechanical design. Judges should have computer, scientific or technical backgrounds.
2. Research Project Presentation – Teams will present their project to a panel of judges. The project will have 3 components: a) Identify an issue related to this year's theme, analyze data, b) Create an innovative solution, c) Share the research and solution. Judges rank the quality/merits of each team’s presentation. Judges should have backgrounds in the technical/scientific/research fields.
3. Teamwork – “Gracious Professionalism” is one of the mantras of the FLL. This area judges a team on their ability to be enthusiastic and show partnership, respect for their teammates, support and encouragement for other teams. Judges need not have technical backgrounds. Any leader who recognizes, practices, or teaches teamwork would make an exceptional judge. Good prospects are team coaches, military professionals, teachers, police officers, Eagle Scouts, etc.
Judges will need to plan to be at the UMBC competition from approximately 7:30 am to 5pm on January 19, 2013.
